IN THE ARENA EN CHARCAS



En los ultimos 5 dias confirme que las experiencias mas maravillosas del mundo estan mas cerca de lo que u
no imagina y que para vivirlas puede tomar de uno a doce anos de busqueda. Mi estancia en Venado-Charcas fue unica. Regresar a mis raizes con algo que ofrecer es sin duda mi mayor orgullo.  Mis experiencias, mis historia de lucha, perseverancia y disciplina van mucho mas alla que un reconocimiento o un premio.

El poder tocar el corazon de la gente es aun de mas valor. El demostrar humidad y respeto no solo nos traen exito, pero felicidad. Y eso es justo lo mi decision de correr el Medio Mraton Venado-Charcas me regalo, Felicidad. Esta carrera la corri pensando en mi familia que no habia tenido la oportunidad de verme correr. Por ellos tuve la fortaleza para estar en la linea de salida. Y ellos junto con toda la gente que salio a apoyar el evento fueron los que me inspiraron a llegar a la meta.

Por lo pronto un resumen de las actividades que realize durante mi estancia en Charcas. En los proximos dias estare escribiendo detalladamente una resena de cada una de ella.

Jueves 17 de Abril: Conferencia en la Presidencia Municipal

Fue un gran honor poder disfrutar con mi gente mis viviencias y experiencias.

Viernes 18 de Abril: Corri y comparti con el equipo de atletismo de la Universidad de San Luis Potosi.Visite y desayune con una de las familias mas humildes de Charcas. Su estilo de vida es admirable.

Sabado 19 de Abril: Complete el Medio Maraton Venado-Charcas terminando en el puesto numero 5to, abraze y salude a mis amigos de la infancia, celebre con los chiquitines charquences su triunfo y comparti con mis famliares al maximo.




Domingo 20 de Abril:Participe en la primera rodade por la Salud con el grupo Las Lagartigas del Altiplano Potosino donde visitamos a una comunidad rural.

El significado de In The Arena:

In the Arena es el titulo del discurso que Theodore Roosevelt dio a la ONU en La Sorbona en París , Francia , el 23 de abril de 1910. "No es el crítico quien cuenta; ni aquellos que señalan como el hombre fuerte se tambalea, o en qué ocasiones el autor de los hechos podría haberlo hecho mejor. El reconocimiento pertenece realmente al hombre que está en la arena, con el rostro desfigurado por el polvo, sudor y sangre; al que se esfuerza valientemente, yerra y da un traspié tras otro pues no hay esfuerzo sin error o fallo; a aquel que realmente se empeña en lograr su cometido; quien conoce grandes entusiasmos, grandes devociones; quien se consagra a una causa digna; quien en el mejor de los casos encuentra al final el triunfo inherente al logro grandioso; y que en el peor de los casos, si fracasa, al menos caerá con la frente bien en alto, de manera que su lugar jamás estará entre aquellas almas frías y tímidas que no conocen ni la victoria ni el fracaso"




In The Arena in Charcas- English Version

The past 5 days confirmed that the most wonderful experiences of the world are closer than one might imagine and to live them can take from one to twelve years of search . My five day visit to Venado and Charcas was unique. Being back to my roots with something to offer is definitely my greatest pride. My experiences, my story of struggle , perseverance and discipline go far beyond recognition or reward . The power to touch the heart of people is priceless . To be able to show humility and respect not only bring us success , but happiness. Participating at the Venado -Charcas 23,1 km was trhe best decision to date. I ran this race thinking about the rest of my family left behind. Those  that had never seen my stride . Its was them and all the people who came out to support us during the route who gave me  the strength to stand on the starting line and make it to the finish .





There is so much t be said about my trip, in the meantime a summary of the activities that I made during my stay at Charcas. In the coming days, I will be posting a detailed review of each of them .Thursday, April 17 : Lecture at City Hall It an honor to share with young and adults my story.Friday, April 18 : Ran with University of San Luis Potosi track team. I dined with the most humble family one could ever met.

Saturday April 19 :Competed the tradidional Venado-Charcas  23.1km climb. Finishing in  5th place. Hugged and greeted my childhood friends, celebrated our new generation triumph and enjoyed my family  to the fullest. 

Sunday 20 April: Participated in the first ever bike race for Health  with the Lagartigas Biking Club.

MEDIO MARATON VENADO-CHARCAS


Todo comienza por medio de un pensamiento. Ese pensamiento despues se convierte en un plan, un anhelo y finalmente un sueno. Recuerdo que cuando empeze a correr entrenamientos largos de 25 kilometros (2002) en el ahora  lugar de recidencia, Alamosa,Colorado. El medio Maraton Venado-Charcas siempre venia a mi mente. Sin querer comenzaba a visualizar y a planear como seria mi primer medio maraton. En ese entonces mi agenda era excusiva de la Universidad a la que representaba: Adams State University. En el 2001 tuve la gran fortuna de ser reclutada por la Universidad de Adams State para ser parte de su equipo de atletismo. A cambio de recibir una beca de atletismo completa. Mi responsabilidad era contar con buenas calificaciones, dar buenas marcas y calificar para los campeonatos nacionales. Mi beca cubria todo, vivivienda, comida, inscripcion, libros, y viajes. Sin duda me habia ganado la loteria! Una etapa que me lleno de muchas satisfacciones entre ellas 6 titulos Nacionales, varios records Universitarios. La mas importante y significativa fue el haberme graduado de la Universidad con doble licenciatura: Espanol y Sociologia. 


Cuando me gradue (2004), mi lista de planes era inmensa. Entre ellas recuerdo que queria regresar a Mexico y correr el tan tradicional Medio Maraton Venado-Charcas. Seguro haz escuchado ese dicho que dice: Uno propone y Dios dispone.

En el 2005 gracias a Dios consegui mi ciudadania Americana. Y digo gracias a Dios porque atravez de los anos esta oportunidad se ha convertido en una gran bendicion. De acuerdo con un estudio realizado por el Pew Hispanic Center, un grupo privado de Washington que estudia los movimientos migratorios, la cantidad de extranjeros sin papeles en el 2012 llego a los 11.7 millones.

Gracias a mi residencia pude cursar la Universidad y gracias a la Ciudadania encontre nuevos horizontes en el mundo del atletismo. En el 2005 corri mi primer maraton en New York, donde se me dio la oportunidad de debutar como atleta profesional y aunque en ese momento no sabia la magnitud y responsabilidad que esto conllevaba yo me aventure y de la mano y guia de mi entrenador Universitario, Damon Martin, nos embarcamos en una nueva travesia. Recorrer las calles de Nueva York. El resultado no fue del todo placentero, acostumbrada a ganar todas mis carreras universitarias, esta experiencia me brindo mucha humildad, un gran respeto a la distancia y a la competencia. Me di cuanta que estaba compitiendo con las mejores maratonianas del mundo. Mi marca de 2 horas 40 minutos 34 segundos es  uno de mis muchos tesoros y una gran experiencias. Video aqui!


El atletismo paso  de ser una diversion, a una beca y finalmente en una profesion y mi trabajo de completo. Los siguientes  8 anos los dedico a conocer el mercado dentro de Estado Unidos. Despues de muchas altas y bajas en el otono del 2006 decido ir por una nueva marca en lo que seria mi segundo maraton, Twin Cities, el la cuidad de Minneapolis 2:35:00 Con esta marca consigo mi boleto para participar en el Selectivo Olimpico del 2008. Donde las primeras tres terminarian representando a Estado Unidos en las Olimpiadas de Pekin 2008. Este mismo ano, In The Arena, una organizacion sin fines de lucro cuya mision es conectar a atletas con la juventud me habre las puertas y se convierte en mi mayor aliado fianciero. A cambio de 500 horas de trabajo cominutario con la juventud yo tenia asegurado el pago de mi vivienda y comidas. 

En el 2007 fui nominada para representar a Estados Unidos en el Campeonato del Mundo del 2007 en Osaka, Japon. Una vez mas una de las experiencias mas maravillosas de mi vida. Aqui termino el puesto numero 33. Despues de un descanzo. Los siguientes planes son excusivamente dirijidos a mi preparacion para el Selectivo Olimpico que seria en Abril 2008. Aqui termino, en 4to lugar. Solo un puesto lejos de conseguir ese sueno que todo atlete anhela: Llegar a una Olimpiada. En el 2009 nuevamente soy nominada para representar a Estados Unidos en el campeonato del mundo de atletismos en Alemania. 

En el 2010, en Abril nos vamos a Rotterdam para buscar una nueva marca, pero el clima nos nos ayuda. Este mismo ano en el otono nos vamos a Chicago y me toca correr al lado de un gran corredor, ser humano, mentor, y maratonista mexicano,  un gran embajador del atletismo en Mexico, German Silva. En el 2011 nos vamos a Korea a representar a Estados Unidos en lo que seria mi tercer campeonato del mundo. 

Y en el 2012, con toda la ilusion del mundo una vez mas voy tras ese sueno, terminar en las primeras 3 para ir a las Olimpiadas en London, Inglaterra.  El selectivo Olimpico temina siendo mi ultima carrera hasta la fecha. Logro terminar en 33 lugar. Termino con una leccion en mi diaframa y costilla derecha. 

Muchas son las historias y las vivencias que me ha dejado el atletismo, pero nada es mas fuerte como el lidiar con una lesion. Extrano los caminos, extrano los retos, extrano los kilometros. Despues de un ano y media de buscar una solucion a mi lesion, encontre que el descanso, respeto y cuidado a mi cuerpo me devolveria mi salud. Puedo respirar y caminar. Estoy agradecida con lo logrado, pero queda o quedaba algo mas. Despues de mi visita a Charcas en Diciembre del 2013 ese pensamiento de recorrer el Medio Maraton Venado-Charcas volvio a renacer y con el, los animos para volver a arrancar vuelo. 

Ahora con un trabajo de tiempo completo como  asistente de entrenador en la Universiadad de Adams State y mis horas de servicio comunitario con In The Arena,  este 19 de Abril,  regreso a Venado y a Charcas con una mision: correr, conocer, disfrutar, competir, y celebrar el XXX aniversario del  Medio Maraton Venado-Charcas.   Se que los buenos animos, el ambiente, la emocion, seran los que me guiaran y haran de esta una experiencia maravillosa. 

El correr el Medio Maraton Venado-Charcas significa mucho para mi. Naci y creci en ambas cuidades. En Charcas curse parte de mi primaria, la secundaria y la preparatoria. En venado vivi dos anos y fue alli donde curse mi primer ano de primaria. Hoy por hoy mi madre y uno de mis hermanos aun reciden en Charcas y otro de mis hermanos vive en Venado. Para mi es un verdadero orgullo recordar de donde vengo. Nuestras raizes y la familia son lo mas valioso que tenemos. El poder celebrar con tu gente un evento de tanta tradicion como lo es el Medio Maraton Venado-Charcas es de mil maneras una gran bendicion. Este Abril, me toca cumplir aquel pensamiento, sueno y anhelo en una realidad. Aveces planeamos y proponemos, pero no sabemos ni como, ni cuando esos planes se cumpliran. Hace 12 anos visualize, pense en este dia. Hoy por hoy el 19 de Abril sera una realidad y una vez mas podre dar testimonio de que los suenos si se cumplen. 

Mi mision  hoy en dia  es animar, motivar, inspirar tanto a mayores como a menores. Todos tenemos una historia y un mensaje de lucha y superacion. Supere el emigrar de mi lugar de nacimiento, supere aprender otro idioma, supere a un sistema migratorio dificil, supere una nueva cultura, supere muchos exitos y fracasos atleticos. Ahora me toca superar un reto aun mas personal: El completar el Medio Maraton Venado-Charcas.  Alli nos vemos!!

It all starts with a thought. That thought then becomes a plan , a desire and finally a dream. I remember when I started to do 25km long runs on Sundays (2002 ) in my now place of residence, Alamosa , Colorado. I would start wondering about me running at the traditional Venado-Charcas Half Marathon. Inadvertently, I began to visualize and plan how my first half marathon would be like. At that time my schedule was exclusive to Adams State University. I had the great fortune to be recruited by Adams State University to be part of the track team in 2001. In exchange for receiving a full athletic scholarship . My responsibility was to have good grades, achieve good marks and qualify for the national championships . My scholarship covered it all, housing , food, registration , books, and travel. Certainly, in my mind I had won the lottery! At Adams I earned six national titles, broke several university records , but the most important and significant was earning a dregree with double major : Spanish and Sociology .


When I graduated (2004 ), my list of plans was immense. These thoughts of  returning to Mexico and run the Half Marathon Venado-Charcas were there. Have you  heard the saying: One proposes and God disposes?

 Thankfully, In 2005 I got my American citizenship.  I thank God for this  opportunity as this has become a great blessing . According to a study by the Pew Hispanic Center, a private group in Washington that studies migration, the number of undocumented aliens in 2012 came to 11.7 million .

Thanks to my residence I could attend the University and through the Citizenship I found new horizons in the world of athletics . In 2005 I ran my first marathon in New York, where I was given the opportunity to compete as a professional athlete and although at that time I did not know the magnitude and responsibility this entailed. Me and my College Coach, Damon Martin, embarked on a new journey . Running in the streets of New York. This experience gave me a lot of humility , great respect to the distance and competition. I realized I was competing with the best marathon in the world. My mark of 2 hours 40 minutes 34 seconds is one of my many treasures and great experiences. Video here !


Athletics went from being a diversion , a scholarship and eventually a profession and my full time job. The next 8 years dedicated my time to full time running and competing. I got to know the running market within the United States and later on Internationally. After many ups and downs, in the fall of 2006 I decided to go for a new personal best in what would be my second marathon , Twin Cities , the City of Minneapolis where I clocked 2:35:00 With this new mark I punched my ticket to participate in the 2008 Olympic trials. Where the first three  would end up representing United States at the Olympics in Beijing . This same year (2006) , In The Arena , one nonprofit organization whose mission is to connect aspiring Olympians with our youth opens  the doors  to me and becomes my greatest ally.  In exchange for 500 hours of community work and engagement with out youth, I did not have to worry about housing or meals.

In 2007 I was nominated to represent the United States at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka , Japan . Once again one of the most wonderful experiences of my life. Here I finish in 35th place . After a well deserved rest, the following plans were focused on  my preparation for the Olympic Trials which would be in April 2008. Here  I finished in 4th place . Only one place away from fullfilling an athlete's dream: Getting to the Olympics. In 2009, I am once again nominated to represent the United States at the athletics world championships in Germany.

In April of 2010 we go to Rotterdam to chase another personal best, but the weather did not help. The same year in the fall we go to Chicago and I found myself running alongside a great runner , man, mentor, and Mexican marathon runner , a great ambassador for athletics in Mexico , German Silva. In 2011 we are going to Korea to represent the United States in what would be my third World Championships.

In 2012, I try once again to make that Olympic Team. The Olympic Trials was the last marathon or race to date. There I managed to finish in 33rd place. Followed by an strain rib and a hurt diaphragm.

There are many stories and experiences that athletics has left me, fighting an injury has been the most challenging one. I miss the roads, the challenges, the long training runs, and competition. After a year and a half, I found that rest , respect and care for my body would allowed me to run again. I can breathe, walk, jog and run. I am grateful with the progress.  After my visit to Charcas in December 2013, the thought of running the Venado-Charcas  Half Marathon came back and with it the motivation to come back.

Now with a full-time job as an assistant coach at Adams State University and my community service hours with In The Arena this April 19 , I will be come back to my roots with a mission: run, learn , enjoy , compete , and celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of the  Venado-Charcas Half Marathon. I know the good spirits , the atmosphere , and the excitement will guide me and will make this a wonderful experience.

Running the Half Marathon Venado - Charcas means a lot to me. I was born and raised in both cities. In Charcas, I attended my primary , secondary and high school.  I lived in Venado for two years and it was there were I attended my first year of primary school. Charcas is the home of my mother and one of my brothers and in Venado I have another sibling living there with his family. It makes me proud to remember where I come from . Our roots and family are the most valuable thing we have. Being able to celebrate with your people an event with such tradition is in many ways a blessing. This April, I will have the blessing of making that thought , dream and desire a reality. Sometimes we plan, but we do not know how or when these plans will be fulfilled . 12 years ago, I thought of this day, I envisioned, I visualized it. On April 19th,it will be a reality and once again, I will  be able to give testimony that dreams can be fulfilled.

My mission today is to encourage, motivate, inspire both adults and our youth. Everyone has a story and a message of struggle and overcoming . I overcome migrating from my birthplace , overcome learning another language , overcome a difficult immigration system, lerning another culture, overcame many athletic successes and failures. Now I have to overcome an even more personal challenge : Finishig the Venado-Charcas Half marathon. See you there !
